Moalboal

Moalboal, Cebu: Your Ultimate Travel Guide

When life gets hectic, I like to daydream to take a break. But since I can’t go on long trips often, it’s hard to find time for it. But, I believed in the old saying, “Don’t let work consume you; find time to let life in.” Luckily, I found the perfect place for a quick getaway in the south-western tip of Cebu – Moalboal!

If you want a short escape, going to Moalboal will give you a great time with exciting adventures, delicious foods, and beautiful views.

In this blog, I’ll tell you all about my trip. I’ll talk about how to travel to Moalboal from Cebu City, where to stay, the best places to visit, fun things to do, and places to eat in Moalboal.

Please remember that the prices mentioned in this blog for fares, rentals, and other fees were accurate as of July 2023 and are subject to change without prior notice.

How to get to Moalboal from Cebu City?

Moalboal was on my bucket list. If you’re looking for a quick and refreshing getaway without having to travel too far [that is, if you come from Cebu or neighboring places], definitely put Moalboal on your bucket list.

Just a quick journey from central Cebu, this magical paradise, Moalboal, has everything I love – beautiful beaches, fun water activities, delicious food to enjoy, and a calm, relaxing atmosphere.

I headed to the South Bus Terminal in Cebu City, and there, I saw many buses, all set to take excited travelers, like me, to Moalboal and different places. If you’re traveling with friends or family, you can also choose private vans, or rental cars for a more convenient trip.

Carrying my backpack and camera, I got on the Ceres Liner bus and found a cozy window seat. The journey to Moalboal from Cebu City was easy and had breathtaking views.

Travel options from Cebu City to Moalboal

1. Bus [Aircon & Non-Aircon]:

Taking the bus to Moalboal is a great way to save money, but it might take just a little longer to reach your destination. Buses come in different classes, aircon and non-aircon. If you’re coming from another country, just hop in a taxi from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to get to Cebu South Bus Terminal.

Getting from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to Cebu South Bus Terminal gives you lots of options, depending on what you like and how much you want to spend. Here’s a list of ways to travel, starting with the cheapest and ending with the fanciest. This makes it easy to find the right way to get from the airport to where you’re going.

a. Multicab

  • Multicab + Bus (Local Public Transport)

This choice is the cheapest, but keep in mind, you might need to take 2 to 3 rides to reach Cebu South Bus Terminal. It could be crowded and not as comfy as other options. From the airport, catch a multicab that will take you to Savemore or Island Central Mall [ICM]. Multicab fare is 12-13. From Savemore or ICM, hop on a bus headed to Cebu downtown proper (Robinson Fuente). The fare usually costs around ₱40-50. Once you’re at Robinson Fuente, you’ll need to take one more ride (either a jeep, taxi, or motorcycle) to reach Cebu South Bus Terminal.

The travel might take 1 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. So, if you’re carrying a lot of luggage or traveling with family or a group, this might not be the best choice.

  • Multicab + Ferry boat

Another budget-friendly option is to ride a ferry boat. Once again, catch a multicab from the airport to Virgin De Regla Parish. At the back of the parish, you’ll find the ticket booth for the ferry boat. The regular fare for the ferry boat ticket is ₱35, but it’s ₱25 for students/senior citizens. There’s also a ₱2 terminal fee, but it’s free for senior citizens. The ferry ride takes about 20 to 30 minutes and will drop you off at Cebu Pier 3 Port. From there, you’ll need one more ride by taxi, jeep, or motorcycle to reach the Cebu South Bus Terminal. This option is best if you want to avoid getting stuck in traffic.

b. Motorcycle (Joyride/Angkas)

This is, by far, the best choice for solo travelers who need to get to their destination quickly. My all-time favorite is Joyride lol. I find their rates cheaper than Angkas. You need to install their apps, from Playstore or App Store, for you to book a ride.

Her Travel Stories - Angkas Joyride

c. MyBus

MyBus runs every day from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to SM City Cebu. You can find it in the Taxi Bay Area of Terminal 1 Domestic Arrival and the Bus Bay of Terminal 2 International Arrival and vice versa with daily trips from 7 AM to 10 PM (20-minute intervals). The fare is ₱50.

From SM City Cebu, you can catch a jeep, taxi, or motorcycle to reach the Cebu South Bus Terminal.

d. Taxis – White

If you want a more private and convenient ride, you can choose to take a taxi. You’ll find local white-metered taxis available at Terminal 1 Domestic Arrival and Terminal 2 International Link Bridge Arrival. The flagdown rate is 40 with an additional 13.50 for every succeeding kilometer and 2 for every two minutes of waiting time during traffic. They operate 24/7. Taxis can accommodate 2 to 4 passengers. They can drive you straight to Moalboal, but it will be quite expensive.

Her Travel Stories - White Yellow Taxis

e. Taxis – Yellow

These taxis are authorized by Mactan-Cebu International Airport and operated by the Cebu Association of Tour Operators Inc. You can locate them at Terminal 1 for domestic arrivals and Terminal 2 for international arrivals. The starting rate is ₱70, and then it’s ₱4 for every 300 meters after that. They’re available 24/7

f. Airport Shuttle Service

Fare varies, but usually higher than taxis. Some hotels and private companies have shuttles that go from the airport to different places, like Cebu South Bus Terminal. It might cost more, but it’s comfy.

The buses from Cebu South Bus Terminal to Moalboal usually take the Bato Barili route. Unfortunately, you can’t get a ticket online. Head directly to the ticketing area inside the terminal. You’ll find bus companies like Ceres Liner, Philtranco Bus, and DLTB Bus there.

Bus schedules and routes might change, so it’s a good idea to check with the terminal or local transportation sources for the latest information days or weeks before you travel.

The bus fare ranges from 170 or $3.06 for non-aircon to 209 or $3.77 for air-conditioned. I suggest you choose an air-conditioned bus because it’s more comfortable. It has seats that can lean back, and there’s plenty of room for your legs. Also, the journey typically lasts 3 to 5 hours, depending on how busy the roads are and what the conditions are like.

The bus will drop you off in front of Gaisano Mall in Moalboal. From there, you can easily find a trike or habal-habal (motorbike taxi). Don’t worry, there are plenty of them available to take you where you need to go. The minimum fare is only ₱50 per person or $1, but they might ask for more if your destination is far or special.

Remember, bus schedules and routes can change, so it’s a good idea to check with the terminal or local transportation sources for the latest information before you travel.

2. Private Van:

Another easy choice is to rent a private van. It’s more comfy and gives you more freedom than public transport. You can get van services at travel agencies or book one ahead of time.

If you’re in a group and want more room to yourselves, I recommend renting a private van. The cost varies, starting from ₱1,300 per person or $50 to $70, depending on how big your group is and the kind of van you choose. Travel time is around 2.5 hours. It’s a good choice if you don’t have much time.

3. Taxi/Grab:

Taxis are available in Cebu City. It will take around 1.5 to 2 hours to travel. This choice works well for groups of two to four people, but it’s pricier than other options. That’s because it covers more distance, includes fuel costs, and offers the convenience of a private ride. Most taxis use meters to calculate fares. They can pick you up straight from the airport or from your doorstep. Prices typically range from ₱3,500 to ₱3,800, or $63.08 to $68.49 for the whole trip

4. Rental Car:

If you’re okay with driving, you can rent a car from Cebu City to Moalboal. In Cebu City, many rental car companies let you drive yourself. The price ranges from 2,000 to 4,500 per day, depending on what type of car. If you’re not sure about driving yourself or worried about getting lost, you can rent a private vehicle with a driver. Prices usually range from ₱3,500 to ₱5,000, or $65.95 to $91.36, and this often includes airport pick-up. It’s another option to get to Moalboal quickly, taking less than 2 hours.

Before your travel, it’s best to check the current schedules, fares, and availability of your chosen transportation. These things can change, so it’s best to book ahead, especially during busy times, to make sure you have a ride and a smooth journey.

Touchdown in Moalboal: A glimpse of paradise

After traveling for about three and a half hours, the bus finally reached the town center of Moalboal. As I got off the bus, a rush of excitement surged through me – I finally arrived in Moalboal, a lovely tropical paradise I had been eyeing to visit! Excited to get to the beach, I got a tricycle to take me to Panagsama Beach, my final stop. The driver was friendly and knew the way well. Soon, I saw the sparkling blue sea ahead, making me even more eager.

When I reached Panagsama Beach, I was amazed by the beautiful nature all around. It’s one of the best places in Moalboal!

You’ll be asked to pay 50 or a dollar for environmental purposes. To see the area better, I suggest renting a scooter. The rental rates range from 250 to 300 per day, depending on the duration. Don’t forget your driver’s license to start your adventure!

Chocolate Hills, Bohol

Cebu to Bohol: Your Ultimate Traveler’s Guide with Insider Tips & Bohol’s Top Attractions

As a travel enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for beautiful places to relax and unwind.

Cebu is like a second home to me, where I’ve lived for nearly thirteen years. Amidst the busy life in Cebu City, I often crave a short getaway—a chance to take a break from the hustle and bustle.  One journey took me to the island of Bohol, a destination known for its iconic formations of the Chocolate Hills, stunning beaches, and dive spots—the best place to consider if you need a quick break.

Let me tell you about my experience getting to Bohol from Cebu and share some tips to make your trip easier and more budget-friendly.

Please note that the information in this blog, like fares and rental rates, may change without notice.

How to get to Bohol from Cebu?

When traveling from Cebu City to Bohol, there are three modes of transportation to consider: by ferry, fast craft, and/or by plane. Each option has its benefits, and which one you pick depends on what you like and how long you want to travel. If you’re planning to visit Bohol and explore its beautiful spots, you can either take the route from Cebu to Tubigon or Cebu to Tagbilaran City.

I recall traveling by ferry from Cebu Port Pier 3 to Tubigon, Bohol, with my family. The ferry tickets are priced reasonably. Naturally, we opted for the cheaper option (wink). We took a day trip by ferry so we could enjoy watching the breathtaking ocean views while onboard. It was roughly a 2-hour travel.

If you’re in downtown Cebu, you can ride a taxi, jeepney, minibus, or motorcycle (habal-habal, Angkas, or Joyride) to get to Cebu Port. If you’re coming from Lapu-Lapu City or Mactan Island, you can take a ferry boat straight to Cebu Port Pier 3.  Below, you’ll find a compilation of ferry companies, fares, and schedules for your reference.

Ferry/Fast Craft Operators, Fare & Schedule

Cebu to Tubigon Route

Cebu to Tagbilaran City Route

Discounts: Kids, students, and seniors can get cheaper fares. Just ask the ticket booth about the discount.

The fares and schedules mentioned are from September 2023 and could change without warning. For the latest ticket prices and details, it’s best to check their websites or ask at the ferry terminals directly.

Flying from Cebu to Bohol

Right now, there are no airlines offering direct flights from Cebu-Mactan International Airport to Bohol-Panglao International Airport. Most routes involve one or more connecting flights.

Choosing the Right Mode of Transportation

When you’re figuring out the best way to travel, there are a few key factors to consider:

  1. Budget: If you’re on a tight budget, ferries and fast boats are usually more affordable choices for travel.
  2. Convenience: Fast boats get you there faster, but ferries let you relax and enjoy the view.
  3. Itinerary: If you’re short on time or have specific places to go, faster transportation might be better.

Important To Know

Since September 2023, you can’t bring live pigs, pork, or any pork products from Cebu City into Bohol. Bringing pork, whether raw or cooked, is forbidden and will be taken away if found. At Tubigon Port, they use dogs to sniff luggage for pork.

Arriving in Bohol: Embracing Thrills and Excitement!

When we got to Tubigon Port, I felt excited and couldn’t wait for our adventure to begin. We had planned everything carefully, even booking a reliable service ahead of time to make sure we arrived smoothly. And there it was, a van waiting for us just outside Tubigon Port — a beacon of excitement and convenience. My heart filled with happiness as we settled into the comfy seats, knowing our trip was about to begin.

You can catch a tricycle from Tubigon Port to Tubigon market for ₱20 per person, which is just a short walk away. From there, you have many options for transportation: tricycles, habal-habal (motorcycles), buses (with or without air conditioning), and vans (V-Hire), ranging from ₱50 to ₱200 depending on where you want to go.

As for those taking the route of Tagbilaran City Port, same means of transportation. Multicab is available in Tagbilaran City. The fare varies depending on where you want to go.

If you’re traveling with family or friends and prefer privacy, comfort, and convenience, renting a van or car is your best bet.

Best Attractions in Bohol

Here’s the best part: exploring the famous spots in Bohol! Let me be your guide! I’ll tell you about the must-see attractions in Bohol that you can’t miss. Get ready for an adventure full of fun, wonder, and memories that will last a lifetime! Strap in and let’s go!

One of the best moments of the trip was when we visited Sagbayan Peak. As we arrived at the top, I couldn’t believe my eyes! I was instantly blown away. Standing on the edge of the viewpoint, I felt like I was at the top of the world! The hills stretched endlessly, covered in vibrant green. I was mesmerized by the stunning beauty of it all. I felt very calm and peaceful. We couldn’t resist capturing the stunning scenery. It was a place where time seemed to stop, giving me a chance to stop, think, and admire the amazing Earth.

Next up was the Chocolate Hills Adventure Park. Another breathtaking nature experience. Get ready to climb stairs to reach the top. When we got there, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was like stepping into a surreal dreamland. I saw hundreds of rounded hills spread across the landscape, as far as I could see. They’re called the ‘Chocolate Hills,’ but they looked green to me. Maybe they turn brown like chocolate during the dry season (lol). There were no extravagant designs. It was nature at its best—untouched, grand, and breathtaking. Thinking about how these hills formed over thousands of years amazed me.

Later, we enjoyed a peaceful meal aboard a floating restaurant on the peaceful Loboc River. We savored local dishes while drifting along the calm waters, surrounded by lush greenery and soothing live music. Along the way, we saw villagers fishing and bathing in the river, their warm greetings making us feel part of their community, if only for a moment. It was a perfect chance to relax and soak in the beauty of nature.

We also drove through the Bilar-Loboc Man-Made Forest. It was like entering a magical realm. As we got closer, I was amazed and couldn’t believe my eyes. The first word I uttered was, “Wow!” Towering mahogany trees formed a canopy above and greeted us. The sight was truly magnificent. The trees stand tall and majestic. As our van drove through the forest, the air felt cooler and fresher. The scenery was mesmerizing, making me feel peaceful and calm. The sounds of birds and rustling leaves added to the tranquility of the trip. We had to stop for a moment just to take in the beauty of this forest created by humans.

Another highlight of our trip was the butterfly sanctuaries. There are many butterfly centers and sanctuaries in Bohol. I visited the Sagbayan Peak Butterfly Dome and the Bohol Habitat Conservation Center. Inside the dome, I was surrounded by butterflies of different colors and sizes, gracefully flying around. It felt like stepping into a magical garden, where these beautiful creatures could enchant visitors like me.

Now let’s go for a historical experience. We next visited the Sandugo Site. It felt like stepping back in time when I visited the historic Blood Compact site, where Spanish explorer Miguel López de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna, the chieftain of Bohol, forged a friendship treaty. Standing there, I felt a connection to the past and appreciated the island’s history.

And of course, a trip to Bohol wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary. It was amazing to finally see these tiny creatures in their natural habitat. The tarsiers, with their big eyes and small bodies, were captivating. They were shy and delicate, clinging to branches and watching us curiously. The sanctuary was dedicated to preserving their environment and well-being. Our guide shared insights into their behavior, habitat, and conservation efforts.

We also visited the ancient walls of Baclayon Church, which seemed to echo stories of the past. The church was filled with religious artifacts and centuries-old artwork. It was like stepping into a living museum, where every corner held a story waiting to be discovered. For me, it was a humbling experience to be in a space that had witnessed generations of worship and devotion.

Feel a mix of excitement and fear at the Sipatan Twin Hanging Bridge. Crossing the swaying bamboo bridge challenged my bravery, but reaching the other side felt like a big achievement. The bridge moved with every step, adding to the thrill. The height and the views made it an unforgettable adventure. It showed me that stepping out of my comfort zone can lead to amazing experiences.

We also had the Abatan River Firefly Tour.  We hopped on a boat sailing into the peaceful Abatan River at night. The sky sparkled with countless fireflies, making the trees look like something out of a fairy tale. The Abatan River Firefly Tour wasn’t just about seeing nature’s magic—it was about finding peace in the quiet beauty of the night. It was a chance to slow down and appreciate the world around us.

For those who crave adventure, the Danao Extreme Adventure was a real thrill. It’s where all the heart-pounding action happens, requiring courage. From sky biking and ziplining to rappelling and canyon swinging, this tour is sure to get your adrenaline pumping! If you’re seeking an exciting adventure, the Danao Extreme Adventure Tour is the perfect choice! We embraced our inner daredevils and pushed our limits. All day long, the guides kept us safe and cheered us on during every exciting activity. Their knowledge and friendliness made the whole experience better, and we felt confident and supported. It reminded me how amazing it feels to embrace adventure and take chances. It was a day that filled me with excitement and gave me memories to cherish forever.
