How to get to Moalboal from Cebu City?
Moalboal was on my bucket list. If you’re looking for a quick and refreshing getaway without having to travel too far [that is, if you come from Cebu or neighboring places], definitely put Moalboal on your bucket list.
Just a quick journey from central Cebu, this magical paradise, Moalboal, has everything I love – beautiful beaches, fun water activities, delicious food to enjoy, and a calm, relaxing atmosphere.
I headed to the South Bus Terminal in Cebu City, and there, I saw many buses, all set to take excited travelers, like me, to Moalboal and different places. If you’re traveling with friends or family, you can also choose private vans, or rental cars for a more convenient trip.
Carrying my backpack and camera, I got on the Ceres Liner bus and found a cozy window seat. The journey to Moalboal from Cebu City was easy and had breathtaking views.
Travel options from Cebu City to Moalboal
1. Bus [Aircon & Non-Aircon]:
Taking the bus to Moalboal is a great way to save money, but it might take just a little longer to reach your destination. Buses come in different classes, aircon and non-aircon. If you’re coming from another country, just hop in a taxi from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to get to Cebu South Bus Terminal.
Getting from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to Cebu South Bus Terminal gives you lots of options, depending on what you like and how much you want to spend. Here’s a list of ways to travel, starting with the cheapest and ending with the fanciest. This makes it easy to find the right way to get from the airport to where you’re going.
a. Multicab
- Multicab + Bus (Local Public Transport)
This choice is the cheapest, but keep in mind, you might need to take 2 to 3 rides to reach Cebu South Bus Terminal. It could be crowded and not as comfy as other options. From the airport, catch a multicab that will take you to Savemore or Island Central Mall [ICM]. Multicab fare is ₱12-13. From Savemore or ICM, hop on a bus headed to Cebu downtown proper (Robinson Fuente). The fare usually costs around ₱40-50. Once you’re at Robinson Fuente, you’ll need to take one more ride (either a jeep, taxi, or motorcycle) to reach Cebu South Bus Terminal.
The travel might take 1 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. So, if you’re carrying a lot of luggage or traveling with family or a group, this might not be the best choice.
- Multicab + Ferry boat
Another budget-friendly option is to ride a ferry boat. Once again, catch a multicab from the airport to Virgin De Regla Parish. At the back of the parish, you’ll find the ticket booth for the ferry boat. The regular fare for the ferry boat ticket is ₱35, but it’s ₱25 for students/senior citizens. There’s also a ₱2 terminal fee, but it’s free for senior citizens. The ferry ride takes about 20 to 30 minutes and will drop you off at Cebu Pier 3 Port. From there, you’ll need one more ride by taxi, jeep, or motorcycle to reach the Cebu South Bus Terminal. This option is best if you want to avoid getting stuck in traffic.
b. Motorcycle (Joyride/Angkas)
This is, by far, the best choice for solo travelers who need to get to their destination quickly. My all-time favorite is Joyride lol. I find their rates cheaper than Angkas. You need to install their apps, from Playstore or App Store, for you to book a ride.
c. MyBus
MyBus runs every day from Mactan-Cebu International Airport to SM City Cebu. You can find it in the Taxi Bay Area of Terminal 1 Domestic Arrival and the Bus Bay of Terminal 2 International Arrival and vice versa with daily trips from 7 AM to 10 PM (20-minute intervals). The fare is ₱50.
From SM City Cebu, you can catch a jeep, taxi, or motorcycle to reach the Cebu South Bus Terminal.
d. Taxis – White
If you want a more private and convenient ride, you can choose to take a taxi. You’ll find local white-metered taxis available at Terminal 1 Domestic Arrival and Terminal 2 International Link Bridge Arrival. The flagdown rate is ₱40 with an additional ₱13.50 for every succeeding kilometer and ₱2 for every two minutes of waiting time during traffic. They operate 24/7. Taxis can accommodate 2 to 4 passengers. They can drive you straight to Moalboal, but it will be quite expensive.
e. Taxis – Yellow
These taxis are authorized by Mactan-Cebu International Airport and operated by the Cebu Association of Tour Operators Inc. You can locate them at Terminal 1 for domestic arrivals and Terminal 2 for international arrivals. The starting rate is ₱70, and then it’s ₱4 for every 300 meters after that. They’re available 24/7
f. Airport Shuttle Service
Fare varies, but usually higher than taxis. Some hotels and private companies have shuttles that go from the airport to different places, like Cebu South Bus Terminal. It might cost more, but it’s comfy.
The buses from Cebu South Bus Terminal to Moalboal usually take the Bato Barili route. Unfortunately, you can’t get a ticket online. Head directly to the ticketing area inside the terminal. You’ll find bus companies like Ceres Liner, Philtranco Bus, and DLTB Bus there.
Bus schedules and routes might change, so it’s a good idea to check with the terminal or local transportation sources for the latest information days or weeks before you travel.
The bus fare ranges from ₱170 or $3.06 for non-aircon to ₱209 or $3.77 for air-conditioned. I suggest you choose an air-conditioned bus because it’s more comfortable. It has seats that can lean back, and there’s plenty of room for your legs. Also, the journey typically lasts 3 to 5 hours, depending on how busy the roads are and what the conditions are like.
The bus will drop you off in front of Gaisano Mall in Moalboal. From there, you can easily find a trike or habal-habal (motorbike taxi). Don’t worry, there are plenty of them available to take you where you need to go. The minimum fare is only ₱50 per person or $1, but they might ask for more if your destination is far or special.
Remember, bus schedules and routes can change, so it’s a good idea to check with the terminal or local transportation sources for the latest information before you travel.
2. Private Van:
Another easy choice is to rent a private van. It’s more comfy and gives you more freedom than public transport. You can get van services at travel agencies or book one ahead of time.
If you’re in a group and want more room to yourselves, I recommend renting a private van. The cost varies, starting from ₱1,300 per person or $50 to $70, depending on how big your group is and the kind of van you choose. Travel time is around 2.5 hours. It’s a good choice if you don’t have much time.
3. Taxi/Grab:
Taxis are available in Cebu City. It will take around 1.5 to 2 hours to travel. This choice works well for groups of two to four people, but it’s pricier than other options. That’s because it covers more distance, includes fuel costs, and offers the convenience of a private ride. Most taxis use meters to calculate fares. They can pick you up straight from the airport or from your doorstep. Prices typically range from ₱3,500 to ₱3,800, or $63.08 to $68.49 for the whole trip
4. Rental Car:
If you’re okay with driving, you can rent a car from Cebu City to Moalboal. In Cebu City, many rental car companies let you drive yourself. The price ranges from ₱2,000 to ₱4,500 per day, depending on what type of car. If you’re not sure about driving yourself or worried about getting lost, you can rent a private vehicle with a driver. Prices usually range from ₱3,500 to ₱5,000, or $65.95 to $91.36, and this often includes airport pick-up. It’s another option to get to Moalboal quickly, taking less than 2 hours.
Before your travel, it’s best to check the current schedules, fares, and availability of your chosen transportation. These things can change, so it’s best to book ahead, especially during busy times, to make sure you have a ride and a smooth journey.
